I love spring because of the rebirth, the return of warmer temperatures and the end of winter, but there’s just something about fall. There’s an excitement in the air. I don’t know if it’s the memory of returning to school or the change in the air. Whatever it is, fall is a special time for me. This year, as it does every year, the first day of autumn arrives on Sept. 22 with the autumnal equinox.

Also during September, Children’s Good Manners Month encourages proper etiquette for the young through parents and teachers. Additionally, International Self-Awareness Month draws attention to the value of knowing oneself. To learn about becoming more self-aware, visit In a Nutshell. While you are there, you may also read up on a new technology for blocking spam.

Even though the fruits (and vegetables) of summer are drying up, there is still a bounty of produce this fall to help you get in your daily requirements, especially during National 5-A-Day Month. Proper nutrition, exercise and training will prevent injuries in children. The focus of National Childhood Injury Prevention Week, Sept. 1-7, is to prevent unintentional injuries to children. Continue your safety attitude during your summer wrap-up activities on Labor Day, Sept. 6.
