Buffet Offers Lesson

Warren Buffet is known to be a generous man. Recently he announced his plans to make the biggest single contribution to philanthropy ever made. It’s also common knowledge that Buffet is generous in other aspects of life.

According to Bill George in Forbes ("The master gives back"), an MBA student from Kazakhstan was the recipient of Buffet’s giving spirit when the student attended a function at which Buffet was present. The student wanted some pictures of himself with Buffet, but he had left his camera in the Berkshire Hathaway boardroom. So, true to his folksy form, Buffet offered to give the student a ride back to the office to pick up the camera.

During the drive, Buffet offered some advice to the young man. Do what you love, he told him. He also revealed that his personal goal was not to live like a king and that he liked living a fairly simple life, simple meals and driving a regular car.

It was then that Buffet offered this nugget of wisdom: "Be a nice person ….It’s so simple that it’s almost too obvious to notice. Look around at people you like. Isn’t it a logical assumption that if you like traits in other people, then other people would like you if you developed those same traits?"

Select Children’s Names With Care

Choosing a baby name is a big deal. After all, the little tyke is going to be saddled with it for the rest of his or her life. So before you commit to a name, it’s a good idea to mull over some of the possibilities. As with almost anything in life, you’ll want to do your homework, too. The web is full of historical information and statistics and you’ll probably want to invest in a good baby-name book as well. Things you might want to look for are the current popularity of the name and any historical associations.

Here are a few suggestions from a Parents magazine article by Sam Apple, "The best baby names (right now)":

• Apple suggests a few names gleaned from nature. For girls, how about Meadow, Coral, Daisy, Brooke or Indigo. For boys, there’s Basil, Mica, Slate, Sage or Lake.

• Dipping into older names can also be fun, Apple said. For girls try on these: Bess, Cora, Nell, Hazel or Violet. For boys give Ernest, Bert, Lewis or Walt a whirl.

Try putting a last name first. For girls, Cooper, Carson or Fisher might do nicely, according to Apple. For boys, you might want to consider Kennedy, Miller or Ellis.

• It might even be fun to dip into pet names for your kid (be careful here). Apple likes Sadie and Benji for a girl and Buddy and Tiger for a boy.
